Huawei has planned to place yet another phone on the market; the Huawei Honor 9i. This mid-range phone is reported to have given quite a challenge to its competitors on the market. Though, there are areas where it may lack, it presents some astonishing features as well. With an impressive camera, a nice body, lets see where it lacks and where it surprises us.

Huawei Honor 9i Details

Introduction:

Where the Huawei Honor 9 was considered a flagship phone with quite the game-changing capabilities, the release of Huawei Honor 9i indicated it was made for the mid-range user looking for distinctive features. The most powerful feature of this phone can easily be recognized to be the camera, but there is a lot more where that came from! Time to tear it all apart and see for ourselves where it really stands and whether or not should you spend your hard earned money on the Huawei Honor 9i or not.

Display and Design:

The Huawei Honor 9 packs a full view 5.9 inch display stretching with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and nearly bezel less display. The display can be compared with the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus 6 inch beast, but the bezel count is where Honor 9i takes the lead. With the screen to body ratio of 83%, and pixel density of 432, expect nothing but crisp and sharp images on the IPS LCD display of Honor 9i.

As far as design is concerned, this phone is reported to sit well in the hands of users. The build quality feels premium in the hands, and the design also stands out with the metal uni body. The fingerprint sensor is located at the back below the vertical dual cameras and that's about it at the back. On the front, a huge immersive display is found and at the sides you will locate the usual volume and power buttons and a hybrid sim slot as well. That is about it in the design department.

Performance:

If you are looking for a feature-rich experience, Honor 9i is the phone for you. This is due to the fact that Honor 9i packs EMUI 5 running on top of Nougat. Alongside this, there’s additional features such as Application twin and navigations buttons customization.

When it comes to the chip set, Honor 9i works on the Kirin 659. This chip set contains an octa-core processor with four cores running at 2.36 Ghz and four power saving cores at 1.7 Ghz. This means that, when a device running on Kirin 659 needs power, it has more to draw from. This chip set proves to be quite the powerful competitor to the Snapdragon 625 used by Xiaomi Redmi 5 plus. The 625 is also octa core but even its weakest are clocked at 2.0Ghz. Though, the issue rising in Redmi 5 plus is that it is an aging chip set and soon to grow obsolete.

The drawback however, of the Kirin 659 is that, the phone lacks Qualcomm’s quick charge technology. In the world marching towards fast charging and usb-c, Honor 9i is a stubborn phone by Huawei not adapting the good change.

The Antutu score of Honor 9i ranks it better than 82% of the smart phones with a very decent score of 75K. Huawei Honor 9i has done a good job in the performance department and it is worth applauding that the mid range devices aren't just laggy pieces of hardware.

Camera:

Now, let us look at the most defining feature of the Huawei Honor 9i; the camera. It has a total of 4 cameras! The rear camera stands at 13MP along with another 2MP camera for depth sensing. The front camera holds an astonishing 16MP with a 2MP camera for depth sensing.

If compared to Redmi note 5 plus, this phone’s camera is miles ahead and levels better in quality and results. Not only to this, but almost every other phone present within the mid-range. The front camera also has a 120-degree wide angle! Good lord.

The drawback of the camera, though, is that there is no optical zoom present. Even the affordable Xiaomi mi A1 featured an optical zoom. So, if you’re thinking of capturing faraway or macro photography, you’d much rather look at a different phone. But anything else, and Honor 9i is probably the best you will find at this price range.

Battery and Connectivity:

This phone is powered by a 3,340mah battery and can easily last a day and a half, even keeping in mind the daily use of an average user. This is still impressive but if you’re looking for charging it in hours, you are in for a disappointment because there is no fast charging on Honor 9i.

Additional features include Bluetooth, radio, GPS, compass, and uh, the headphone jack? Given that it is 2018, it is quite the privilege to still have the jack, no?

Verdict:

A good midrange phone with decent results in the performance department, and EMUI  making it feature rich device but also a very good performing device. The camera excels in all the departments making it the best smart phone you can afford as a camera enthusiast if you are short on budget. Huawei Honor 9i is an average smart phone with its foot in the mud and head at the sky, hoping to achieve more but forgetting a few essentials like fast charging and usb-c.

Final Verdict

  • Good Battery (3000 mAh)
  • Good Ram (4 GB)
  • Good Camera ( 4 cameras)
  • No fast charging
  • Hybrid Sim Slot
