We all know Nokia from our childhood memories, and we have all learned a lot from the tragedy that was the fall of Nokia and rise of Samsung. And all that for what? For not learning to adapt to change. The story of Nokia is a lesson for all of us, and how in the face of utter defeat, they still rose from their grave with Android. Nokia 5.1 is the successor of Nokia 5, and it is nothing revolutionary, sadly. Let’s tear it apart and see where it stands!

Nokia 5.1 Details

Introduction:

It is never too late is the lesson from Nokia that we all need to learn. Despite all the challenges, they are back in the game and are releasing devices one after another, learning from their mistakes and rectifying with their new series, Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1, Nokia 5.1 and Nokia 6.1!

Display and Design:

Nokia has never disappointed people when it comes to build quality. They have used a 6000 series aluminum on the Nokia 5.1 and it comes in a rounded edged form giving it a comfortable feeling in the hands of the user. Fingerprint sensor being placed on the rear is the most visible change you will find when you put it side by side with the Nokia 5. It doesn’t care about the 2018 trends which is nothing new given that how long they took to adapt to Android, so there is no dual camera, no notch and headphone jack still remains, thankfully. The antenna bands are now hidden unlike in Nokia 5, and that makes it to list of visible changes you’ll find on Nokia 5.1 when compared with the predecessor.

In the design department, they have gone all out! With a 5.5 inches display on the aspect ratio of 18:9, they have fitted inside an IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1080x 2160 and pixel density of 439, a huge improvement over Nokia 5 and worth an applause! This makes my heart melt knowing that they understand the dynamics better than the decade old smartphone brands who somehow forget the necessity of a good display in the names of casting out a budget phone. Please learn from Nokia! Good job!

Performance:

Nokia 5.1 went with the MediaTek Helio P18 chipset which is said to be 40% better in performance than its predecessor even though that mark set by Nokia 5 is pretty low. The GPU found in the Nokia 5.1 is a Mali-T680MP2 and is said to give out a decent performance. The processor is clocked at 2.0 GHz on 4 of its core and 1.2 on the rest of the four cores. Nokia 5.1 comes in two variants; 2 GB and 3 GB RAM, both of which are hardly enough for today’s usage. As it goes, Antutu has ranked it better than 78% of the smartphones with a score of 62K. This is where it gets really sad, because that score is really sad and really low for a smartphone aiming to be an affordable and an impressive budget phone which it cannot be given that it will definitely lag around despite the smartphone being on board with Android One and having the vanilla Android experience. Disappointing.

Camera:

Nokia has previously done a decent job on the camera department with majority of the complains being about the sub-par performance.

The rear camera is powered with a 16MP lens that does its job as its meant to, nothing outstanding but nothing below expectations. The front camera is an 8MP lens and will do just fine for your selfies but don’t go around expecting too much eh? The video can be recorded up to [email protected] and that’s about it on the camera department.

Battery and Connectivity:

Nokia 5.1 comes out with the 3000 mAh battery with no improvement on this department over Nokia 5 and sadly, there is no USB-C to be found here either. So the charging will take its due time, but once charged, it will last an average user for about a day at max.

Additional features include Bluetooth, Radio FM, GPS, Accelerometer, a compass and most importantly, a 3.5mm jack.

Verdict:

Nokia 5.1 has made many improvements over the Nokia 5, but has forgotten to adapt the changes that it should have adapted but hasn't in the name of it being a mid-tier device. There is no notch to be found, there is no USB-C, there is no dual camera, and there is very little ram for you to utilize your multi-tasking without a decent amount of lag. But if compared with Nokia 5, it is still a better device. Worth your money? Hardly. I would wait for Nokia 5.1 Plus honestly, but that’s just me.

Final Verdict

  • 18:9 Display
  • Superb Display (1080 x 2160p with 432 ppi)
  • Good Battery Life (3000 mAh)
  • Average Performance (62K Antutu Score)
  • No Dual Camera
  • No USB-C
  • Average RAM (2-3 GB)
