All of that is for good reason, as the graphics card is what handles most of the graphical processing in games. GPU: To put it simply, GPU stands for the graphics processing unit. Many people refer to graphics cards as GPUs as well. However, the GPU is the actual chip that powers the video card itself. A GPU can use different architectures across generations. Typically, manufacturers try to shrink the size of transistors and other features to fit more of them on the chip. The size of these GPUs is measured in nanometers, like 12nm, 7nm, and so on.
VRAM: VRAM or Video RAM is the actual memory on the GPU itself. This works just like the memory or RAM on the motherboard does. It stores textures and images that are on the screen. While a higher amount of VRAM won’t give better performance, a low amount of it means that sometimes textures or other features can disappear or “pop-in”. Boost Clock: Boost clock is also similar to the core clock. However, the boost clock is the highest frequency the graphics card can operate at. You can also say that it can “boost” to a certain speed/frequency. This is also measured typically in MHz. Typically, a card with lower temperatures will run at a higher boost clock. One with a higher temperature reduces the boost clock to keep the card within safe temperatures. This is called thermal throttling.
Memory Clock: The memory clock is also similar to both of the things measured above. It is the frequency or speed at which the VRAM can operate. Again, this is measured in MHz. The memory clock depends on the bus width and the type of memory. A few examples of memory types are GDDR5, GDDR6, and so on. For example, the RTX 3080 has 10GB GDDR6X memory running at 1188MHz.
GPU Cores: If you are familiar with cores on a processor, the general idea is the same here. The cores handle the actual processing that goes on inside the GPU. Nvidia calls these cores CUDA Cores, and AMD refers to them as Steam Processors. There is a lot more to the story, but that should get you up to speed. The number of cores isn’t an exact representation of performance.
TDP: The TDP is the total draw power that the graphics card requires to operate. We can also say that TDP is the amount of heat a GPU can produce. However, TDP is measured in Watts, so take that for what you will. Again, we’re using the RTX 3080 for an example here, and it has a TDP of 320W.
Of course, there is a lot at play here. But if you have a faint idea of what these specs mean, you can make a better decision while purchasing a graphics card in Pakistan. Of course, numbers aren’t everything, and actual benchmarks are what really matter.
