Whenever people are building, purchasing, or upgrading a PC they always tend to talk about the graphics card. All of that is for good reason, as the graphics card is what handles most of the graphical processing in games. Of course, things go more in-depth than that, but a faster graphics card will generally give you better performance.
Graphics card prices in Pakistan are becoming more accessible for the average person. However, for the average joe, things can get complicated with all of those specs and numbers. If you are a bit daunted by all of those, let’s have a look at a quick and brief breakdown.
GPU: To put it simply, GPU stands for the graphics processing unit. Many people refer to graphics cards as GPUs as well. However, the GPU is the actual chip that powers the video card itself. A GPU can use different architectures across generations. Typically, manufacturers try to shrink the size of transistors and other features to fit more of them on the chip. The size of these GPUs is measured in nanometers, like 12nm, 7nm, and so on.
VRAM: VRAM or Video RAM is the actual memory on the GPU itself. This works just like the memory or RAM on the motherboard does. It stores textures and images that are on the screen. While a higher amount of VRAM won’t give better performance, a low amount of it means that sometimes textures or other features can disappear or “pop-in”. Typically, you need at least 4 gigs of VRAM these days, while higher resolutions might demand more. This usually depends on the game and the resolution you are playing at
Core Clock: Core clock is one of the few specs we can use for comparing performance across generations. It is the frequency or speed at which the graphics card typically runs. This is measured in hertz (Hz). For example, the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 runs at 1440 megahertz or 1440MHz.
Boost Clock: Boost clock is also similar to the core clock. However, the boost clock is the highest frequency the graphics card can operate at. You can also say that it can “boost” to a certain speed/frequency. This is also measured typically in MHz. Typically, a card with lower temperatures will run at a higher boost clock. One with a higher temperature reduces the boost clock to keep the card within safe temperatures. This is called thermal throttling.
Memory Clock: The memory clock is also similar to both of the things measured above. It is the frequency or speed at which the VRAM can operate. Again, this is measured in MHz. The memory clock depends on the bus width and the type of memory. A few examples of memory types are GDDR5, GDDR6, and so on. For example, the RTX 3080 has 10GB GDDR6X memory running at 1188MHz.
GPU Cores: If you are familiar with cores on a processor, the general idea is the same here. The cores handle the actual processing that goes on inside the GPU. Nvidia calls these cores CUDA Cores, and AMD refers to them as Steam Processors. There is a lot more to the story, but that should get you up to speed. The number of cores isn’t an exact representation of performance.
TDP: The TDP is the total draw power that the graphics card requires to operate. We can also say that TDP is the amount of heat a GPU can produce. However, TDP is measured in Watts, so take that for what you will. Again, we’re using the RTX 3080 for an example here, and it has a TDP of 320W.
Of course, there is a lot at play here. But if you have a faint idea of what these specs mean, you can make a better decision while purchasing a graphics card in Pakistan. Of course, numbers aren’t everything, and actual benchmarks are what really matter.
Nvidia is one of the two big players when it comes to graphics cards for gaming. They are an American multinational company based in Santa Clara, California. Nvidia makes GPUs for gaming and professional use, as well as SOCs or chips for mobile computing. Their main product line is called GeForce.
The GTX and RTX series are two branches of Nvidia’s GeForce lineup. GPU names can get complicated, especially if you’re not up to date with new releases. Generally speaking, Nvidia makes two types of cards: RTX and GTX. Both of these are followed by four numbers, like GTX 1660 or RTX 3080.
These also have other monikers at the end like “Ti” or “Super”. A graphics card with either of these monikers is faster than the version without them. For example, the RTX 2070 Super is faster than the standard RTX 3070.
GeForce GTX is Nvidia’s “standard series” if you want to call it that. The GTX 1660 Ti is a good example. RTX cards use new features like DLSS (a form of super sampling) and of course, ray tracing. Slowly but surely, as ray tracing becomes the standard, we can expect to see RTX cards dominate and become Nvidia’s main product line altogether.
Nvidia’s modern graphics cards also have the excellent NV encoder. This makes Nvidia GPUs great for rendering, editing, and recording gameplay footage. However, AMD is quickly catching up, and we don’t know how long this statement is going to hold true. Speaking of which, let’s have a look at AMD’s main rival.
PC Gamers will always compare AMD and Nvidia, just how console players will always compare Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo. AMD has been Nvidia’s main rival for a long time now. Both of these companies manufacture graphics cards, and they often compete for the top spot. For the longest time, Nvidia has held the crown when it comes to high-end performance. However, AMD always offers great value in the budget and mid-range area.
All of that can change quite quickly. We’ve seen AMD give Intel a run for their money in the world of processors. We would not be surprised if AMD and Nvidia start cranking up the heat in this competition. AMD is also an American multinational company, and they are also based in Santa Clara, California.
AMD’s main product line is the Radeon series of Graphics Cards.
AMD follows a similar naming scheme to Nvidia. When it comes to AMD, they have changed around their product names a fair bit over the past few years. To make things easier to understand, we’re looking at the current generation of AMD graphics cards that you can buy right now.
Radeon RX is the main product lineup name for every new AMD graphics card these days. The RX name is followed by four numbers, much like Nvidia. The first number indicates the generation, and the last three numbers indicate the model. An RX 5700 is a good example.
The XT moniker is very similar to Nvidia’s TI moniker. Simply put, XT cards are faster than “non-XT” graphics cards. To make things clear the RX 5700 XT is faster than an RX 5700. Despite that, some cards like the 5600 XT and 5500 XT don’t have “non-XT” versions at all (for desktop that it is).
AMD is catching up quickly in gaming performance. Their Big Navi lineup also has support for ray tracing just like the newer RTX cards. There’s a lot of competition in the graphics card world, and that’s what gives us these great products. According to graphics card prices in Pakistan, you could go either way and get a great GPU.
