A webcam is a small camera that transmits an image or video in real-time onto a computer screen. It can be placed on the desk along with your PC or sitting atop it. It can also come as a part of the hardware as on many laptops. Webcams are pretty useful as they can broadcast your image to any video streaming platform. You can do video-calls, make live-streams, take lectures, attend online meetings, and much more from your desk.

A webcam works much like a digital camera except that it has no built-in memory. The purpose of the webcam is to stream your image online and not to store it. It captures light through a small lens at the front. The lens contains an image-sensing microchip that has built-in microscopic light detectors. The image is then either converted into electrical signals (that travel to the computer through a USB cable) or transmitted wirelessly using a Wi-Fi connection.

Internal Hardware

The image sensor is the primary piece of internal hardware in a webcam. This "Electronic Eye" is a semiconductor chip made of millions of light-sensitive squares. These squares slice the incoming image into pixels that are then converted into binary signals to make them understandable for the computer. The most common sensor used in webcams is CMOS that uses a single chip to digitized all the incoming light-rays. A less popular but still widely used sensor is CCD that first converts light-rays into various electrical signals and then digitizes them using multiple chips. CMOS, therefore, is much faster and cheaper as well.

Graphics Quality

Webcams generally offer a low picture quality; however, it has improved in recent times. Today, most low-cost webcams can offer a resolution of 720p. However, mid-range and high-end webcams can reach up to 1080p and 4K as well. serves as a directory/search engine to locate resources on the internet.
